pci-whitelist and pci-blacklist are deprecated, so
use 'allow' and 'block' instead for DPDK versions that
support it.

POSIX defines PRId64/PRIu64/PRIx64 for printing 64-bit values in a
portable way. Replace a few references to %ld to remove the assumption
about the size of a long. Similarly, use %z with size_t arguments.
Where the value being printed is an unsigned 64-bit value, use PRIu64
instead of %ld.
Explicitly test for not __linux__ where that is the intent, rather
than testing for __FreeBSD__.
Cast pointer to uintptr_t before aligning it, rather than using
a specific integer size which may not be large enough to store a
pointer.

RTE_DEV_ALLOWED is an enum and has no associated define, hence checking
for its presence will always be false.
We could test for RTE_DEV_WHITELISTED define, but this macro added for
deprecation warning will be dropped in the future.
Switch to a check on DPDK version.

rte_hash depends on rte_rcu starting in upcoming
DPDK 20.11 release. rte_rcu was only added in
DPDK 19.05 release, so we need to check if it
exists before linking it.

When enable Werror compile option with new kernel(v5.8), there is
following error reported due to the <linux/vfio.h> data structure
change(added a uint8_t data[] variable in new kernel), we can just
put the 'unmap' at the end of the data structure to fix the issue,
I think it's better to just use a stack variable instead.

For virtio-user library and coming vfio-user feature, the client needs
to send the memory file descriptors to target so that the two processes
can setup shared memory region to do data processing without memory copy.
Currently virtio-user will read /proc/self/maps to get memory file descriptor,
since DPDK already provides this such APIs, so here we can just use it,
for existing virtio-user library we may replace it with the new added
API.

The internal vhost library is used when DPDK's version
is older than 19.05 and the experiemntal vhost nvme
target.
For the CONFIG_INTERNAL_VHOST_LIB option, SPDK doesn't
enable this option by default over one year and CI
doesn't cover it either, so we may remove it with
this release.
As for the vhost-nvme target, since we are developing
a new vfio-user target solution, it's OK for us to remove
it now.

renamed phys_addr to iova in rte_memseg structure.
Meanwhile latest DPDK from (72f82c43) removed the
phys_addr altogether.
This patch replaces the reference for DPDK v19.11 and up.

DPDK patch (4143b122) included in DPDK v18.05 replaced
MEMPOOL_F_NO_PHYS_CONTIG with MEMPOOL_F_NO_IOVA_CONTIG.
Meanwhile latest DPDK from (28e3c8b2) removed the
MEMPOOL_F_NO_PHYS_CONTIG.
This patch simply replaced the define, since it will
work for any DPDK v18.05+.

These libraries have existed since DPDK 17.11. We
do not support any DPDK versions older than that, so
there is no need to conditionally handle cases where
those libraries do not exist.

And modify test/env/vtophys to resolve linking errors.
SPDK_PRINTF() and SPDK_ERRLOG() use spdk_log() procedure which is
customizable and redirectable, so it is preffered over printf()
In case of test/env/vtophys/ program,
we have to make it an app first to avoid linking errors.

Makefile support in DPDK was deprecated and will be removed soon,
so switch to the officially supported way of building DPDK -
with meson and ninja. Two new tools. Basically, our Makefiles
will invoke meson+ninja for DPDK, no other SPDK components are
affected.
Apparently DPDK wanted to move away from an octopus-like config
system and the ideology behind meson configuration is simple now:
build everything by default. Some PMDs can be explicitly disabled
with meson command line, but all libraries (both static and shared
versions) and test apps are built unconditionally.
How long does it take to build minimal DPDK with meson? Too much.
On my machine half of the total build time is spent on libraries
we don't need at all. (I have some hacks up my sleeve to disable
building those libraries - see the subsequent patch.) As for the
official way of building a minimal DPDK, there was a patch [1]
on dpdk mailing list to introduce more specific configuration,
but it was rejected:

Let's not follow that direction, hack the DPDK build system instead.
As for advantages of meson+ninja over Makefiles? I can't find any.
It's another build system that does a lot for you with some functions,
magic options, and a built-in dependency system. It seems nice if you know
the syntax, but it's another component that you need to learn, debug,
and possibly find bugs in (there's a lot of github issues open for meson).
I would compare it to CMake.
As for changes in this patch: rather that explicitly disabling
PMDs we don't need, specify a list of PMDs we do need and disable
everything else found in ./dpdk/drivers/*. This way we won't have
to disable the new PMDs as they're added to DPDK.
Meson configuration also sets RTE_EAL_PMD_PATH #define to a valid directory
with built PMD shared libs. When it's set, DPDK dynamically loads all shared
libraries inside. The drivers there depend on DPDK shared libs and fail to
load in static SPDK builds, so we disable them altogether by unsetting
RTE_EAL_PMD_PATH in the meson-generated config file - just like
DPDK Makefiles did. EAL checks for RTE_EAL_PMD_PATH being empty and skips
loading any external PMDs then. We do it for both static and shared libs.
We specify all PMDs at build time for now, so there's just no need to load
them dynamically.
We have three more hacks in our submodule:
* disable building dpdk apps by commenting-out a line in dpdk/meson.build
* disable building unnecessary libs (build everything that spdk *may*
need)
* build isa-l compress pmd with `-L[...] -lisal`. DPDK expects to find
libisal with pkg-config. We don't want to prepare a pkg-config file,
so comment-out a failing check in another meson.build file and provide
isa-l through CFLAGS and LDFLAGS.
We also need to make some changes to our test/external_code. First of
all, -ldpdk is no more. Meson build generates a pkg-config file with all
libs, but we'll switch to it in a separate patch - for now just specify
all -lrte_ libs one by one. -Wl,--no-as-needed has to be added to some
test cases, otherwise rte_mempool_ring isn't loaded. We don't use any
APIs from this library, it only has a static constructor that provides
a few callbacks used by rte_mempool_create(). Also, since DPDK now builds
both static and shared libraries, we need to add -Wl,-Bstatic to force
using static libswhere required. It's only needed for DPDK libs, but we
use it for SPDK libs as well since there's no harm.
As for performance:

before, with the old DPDK makefiles:

Now that drivers can be registered from upper layers there's
no need to keep them centralized inside env.
(check_format.sh complains that spdk_pci_nvme_get_driver() shouldn't
start with the spdk_ prefix - to workaround that we move the function
declaration from one place in env.h to another - that's enough to
convince check_format it really is a public function)

We want to make struct spdk_pci_driver public, so add env-agnostic
fields that define a driver directly to that struct.
PCI driver registration (potentially in upper layers) will only use

You don't get notified when someone starts using your hooked
device, so there's not much gain from knowing when someone
stops.
Remove that callback and also move DPDK device detach under
the same lock which sets the pending_removal flag. This eliminates
a data race window when hotremove notification could arrive
after device was detached, but before it was scheduled to be
removed.
vmd and ioat nest the spdk_pci_device struct and abigail complains
even though the parent structs only have forward declarations in
public headers. Adding those two structs to the suppression list
doesn't help though. Abidiff still complains about the pci device
struct being changed, probably because ioat.h and vmd.h both include
env.h. Abidiff suppresion list should eventually be split per-lib,
but for now ignore struct spdk_pci_device changes globally.

A workaround for kernel deadlocks surfaced in #1275.
DPDK basically offers two APIs for hotplugging all PCI devices:
rte_bus_scan() and rte_bus_probe(). Scan iterates through
/sys/bus/pci/devices/* and creates corresponding rte_pci_device-s,
then rte_bus_probe() tries to initialize each device with the
supporting driver.
Previously we did scan and probe together, one after another, now
we'll have an intermediate step. After scanning the bus, we'll
iterate through all rte_pci_device-s and temporarily blacklist any
newly detected devices. We'll use devargs->data field to a store
a timeout value (integer) after which the device can be un-blacklisted
and initialized. devargs->data is documented in DPDK as "Device
string storage" and it's a char*, but it's not referenced anywhere
in DPDK. rte_bus_probe() respects the blacklist and doesn't do
absolutely anything with blacklisted ones.
The timeout value is 2 seconds, which should be plenty enough
for an NVMe device to reset, leave the critical lock sections in
kernel, and let us initialize it safely.
Note that direct attach by BDF doesn't respect the blacklist,
so an NVMe attach RPC won't be delayed in any way, it will continue
to work as it always did. Only the automatic discovery & enumeration
is deferred.

Extensive testing showed it can fail:
> EAL: eal_parse_sysfs_value(): cannot open sysfs value
> /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:02:00.0/vendor
> EAL: Scan for (pci) bus failed.
spdk_pci_enumerate() would previously return with error because
of this and e.g. the test nvme hotplug app could immediately exit
with failure. A mis-timed scan shouldn't cause this kind of failure,
so ignore it's return code. This shouldn't cause any issues.

There was a chance we scheduled a device removal to the DPDK thread
while that thread was already removing the device from a VFIO hotremove
notification (on the DPDK interrupt thread). The second hotremove
attempt touches some freed memory and segfaults.
The VFIO hotremove notification already checks pending_removal flag
under a mutex and sets it to true, so do the same in spdk_detach_rte()
(called from the SPDK init thread).

Simplify the code path a bit. VFIO notification is the only
place where detach callback is called from the dpdk intr thread.
Detach checks the current thread and behaves differently in this
case, but it could be the VFIO notification that simply calls
a different function.
So instead of carrying the VFIO notification through the generic
detach routine, carry it just through the DPDK-thread specific
subset. This lets us remove some ifs in the generic routine.

The spdk_mem_reserve() function reserves a memory region in SPDK's
memory maps. This pre-allocates all of the required data structures
to hold memory address translations for that region without actually
populating the region.
After a region is reserved, calls to spdk_mem_register() for
addresses in that range will not require any internal memory
allocations. This is useful when overlaying a custom memory allocator
on top of SPDK's hugepage memory, such as tcmalloc.

to the number of work queues) we need to dynamically size/resize our

is done from upper layers via public API into the lib.
* As channels are created, the total number of work queue slots is divided
across the channels evenly. Same thing when they are destroyed, remaining
channels will see the ring sizes increase. This is done from upper layers
via public API into the lib.

* IDXD is an Intel silicon feature available in future Intel CPUs.
Initial development is being done on a simulator. Once HW is
available and the code fully tested the experimental label will be

* The current implementation will only work with VFIO.
* DSA has a number of engines that can be grouped based on application
need such as type of memory being served or QoS. Engines are processing
units and are assigned to groups. Work queues are on device structures
that act as front-end groups for queueing descriptors. Full details on
what is configurable & how will come in later doc patches.
* There is a finite number of work queue slots that are divided amongst
the number of desired work queues in some fashion (ie evenly).
* SW (outside of the idxd lib) is required to manage flow control, to not
over-run the work queues.This is provided in the accel plug-in module.
The upper layers use public API to manage this.
* Work queue submissions are done with a 64 byte atomic instruction
* The design here creates a set of descriptor rings per channel that match
the size of the work queues. Then, an spdk_bit_array is used to make sure
we don't overrun a queue. If there are not slots available, the operation
is put on a linked list to be retried later from the poller.
* As we need to support any number of channels (we can't limit ourselves
to the number of work queues) we need to dynamically size/resize our
per channel descriptor rings based on the number of current channels. This
is done from upper layers via public API into the lib.

When removing large number of devices (>8) in parallel,
the 20ms timeout is not long enough.
As part of spdk_detach_cb, DPDK calls into the VFIO driver
which may get delayed due to multiple hot removes being
processed by pciehp driver (pciehp IRQ thread function
is handling the actual removal of a device in paralle but
all of the IRQ thread function compete for a global mutex
increasing processing time and race conditions).

When using vfio with enable_unsafe_noiommu_mode=Y, force iova-mode
as "pa" here for DPDK guesses it's "va", which cause the following
error: "EAL: Expecting 'PA' IOVA mode but current mode is 'VA',
not initializing".

We use `spdk_map_bar_rte()` to read mapped addresses
from PCI BARs.
This function is currently checking for NULL in each pair.
But in PCI memory, some registers can be left unused,
in which case they are set to 0.
As a result, we may read some NULL pointers from BARs,
which is OK.
To check if given address is indeed invalid, we should first
check if it is used.
So it is best to delegate such checks to the
user of this function.
In fact, users already do the NULL check where it is needed
(ex: virtio_pci.c:390, nvme_pcie.c:589)
so this patch just removes them from `spdk_map_bar_rte()`.
This solves github issue #1206

Memory maps might be dependant on one another, so
make sure their dependencies are unregistered after

This allows us to avoid trying to map the same physical address to the
IOMMU in physical mode while still making sure that we don't
accidentally unmap that physical address before we are done referencing
it.

For TCMalloc regions which we register with spdk at runtime in the MMapHook, we
need to ensure that SPDK doesn't do any allocations in that path otherwise we
will hit a livelock situation. MmapHook is invoked when TCMalloc is out of free
memory and needs to get more memory from the system, for the hugepage case it
gets via mmap.
In the current code, we could end up calling malloc in the spdk_mem_register
call via the following call path.
spdk_mem_register -> spdk_mem_map_set_translation -> spdk_mem_map_get_map_1gb
To avoid this livelock situation we call rte_malloc instead which shouldn't
invoke the system allocator. Note that in try_expand_heap_primary() which is
invoked in the rte_malloc code path, we can still call malloc, so we need to
only use this when dynamic memory allocation is disabled via --legacy-mem.
It is possible in the future we could work around even this limitation,
but for now this implementation will be much simpler.
Have verified this change fixes the livelock condition which I was hitting in
my setup without this fix.

We will use this in a future patch to determine whether it's safe
to use DPDK allocated memory when allocating new 1gb page entries.
We could use it in this patch to decide whether or not to register
the memory hotplug handler, but there's really no harm registering
it even when it's not needed.
Ideally DPDK would provide some kind of API to query how DPDK was
configured. In the normal case we know whether legacy-mem was
specified, but if users initialize DPDK themselves and then call
spdk_env_dpdk_post_init(), we won't know if legacy-mem was specified.
So in that case, we will just assume that it wasn't specified.

If DPDK is using virtual addresses, we should use virtual addresses.
If DPDK is using physical addresses, we should use physical addresses.
This way there can never be a conflict and everything is consistent.

DPDK by default guesses that it should be using iova-mode=va
so that it can support running as an unprivileged user. However,
some systems (especially virtual machines) don't have an IOMMU capable
of handling the full virtual address space and DPDK doesn't
currently catch that. Add a check in SPDK and force iova-mode=pa
here.

In DPDK, the ppc iommu support does not currently allow for
iova-mode=va, but DPDK doesn't detect ppc and so still attempts
to guess iova-mode=va in some modes. Force iova-mode=pa from
SPDK to fix this.

DPDK intr thread is designed that it can't unregister the src
callback in this callback handler. So I think we can't detach
the PCI device in the hotremove callback as it needs to unregister
the VFIO notification callback which will be not successful
but it still can free the device. So at the next req notification
in the handler function, we meet the freed device.

Ideally we'd have a way to query if DPDK is already
initialized but we don't have that yet. We want that
for the case where we have an SPDK application that's part
of a framework that may (or may not) have already initialized
DPDK. If it's already been initialized, let's print an
error message that isn't quite as inflammatory.

The patch of this purpose is to exclude the CPU cores
occupied by the DPDK thread. To mitigate the corner
case, we only do it when the number of online CPU cores
is larger than then DPDK thread occupied cpu cores.
The purpose is uset to improve the performance and avoid the
contention between DPDK thread and user's own thread.

Create dpdk_lib_list_to_libs and dpdk_env_linker_args
functions to generate the library filename list and the
linker arguments respectively. Use these functions
internally as well.
These will be useful as part of the Seastar work, where
Seastar pkg-config includes a bunch of the DPDK libraries,
and SPDK needs to just add a few more.

spdk_pci_device_claim() could create a file on the
filesystem that couldn't be deleted programatically.
It could only be overwritten - e.g. by another spdk
instance - but this didn't really work if that
another instance had less privileges and hence no
access to the previous file.
This is exactly the case we're seeing on our CI when
running SPDK as non-root. In general it's a good idea
not to leave any leftover files, so now we'll delete
the pci claim file when the spdk process exits.
spdk_pci_device_claim() used to return a file descriptor
that could be simply closed to "un-claim" the device.
It'll now return only a return code. The fd will be
stored inside spdk_pci_device and will be closed either
when user calls the newly introduced spdk_pci_device_unclaim(),
or when the device is detached.
We'll still need to clean up those files somewhere in
our test scripts (probably ./setup.sh cleanup) to
clean up after crashed processes or so - but we don't
necessarily want to run such scripts inside the autotest
whenever a non-root spdk is about to be started.

In the past, memory in spdk could have been unregistered in
different chunks than it was registered, so to account
for that the vtophys code used to register each hugepage
(2MB chunk of memory) separately to the VFIO driver. This
really made the code generally simple.
Now that memory in spdk can only be unregistered in the same
chunks it was registered in, we no longer have to register
each hugepage to VFIO separately. We could register the
entire memory region with just a single VFIO ioctl instead,
so that's we'll do now.
This serves as an optimization as we obviously send less
ioctls now, but most importantly it prevents SPDK from
reaching a VFIO registrations limit that was introduced
in Linux 5.1. [1]
The default limit is 65535, which results in SPDK being able to
make only the first 128GB of memory DMA-able. This is most
problematic for vhost where we need to register the memory
of all the VMs.

Previously, aplications were always being linked against the
spdk_env_dpdk.a file even during the shared object build. Change this to
be consistent with our linking.
Also, the old behavior causes issues with resolving symbols in FreeBSD.

When building shared libs, we specifically don't set the --as-needed
flag so that we still link against libraries that have constructor
functions. LD reports on its man page that the default behavior is
equivalent to --no-as-needed.
For RHEL based distros like fedora and centos this works fine. While
the LD man page shipped with ubuntu distributions also states that
--no-as-needed is the default, they don't respect that behavior and do
--as-needed linking unless you force them with --no-as-needed.

Scan-build complains that spdk_vtophys_notify() can segfault
on vaddr == 0. We know that and it's not a programming error.
In fact, SPDK with UIO pci driver can segfault upon registering
any non-mapped memory address. The user is just not supposed
to do that.
Assert vaddr != 0 to silence scan-build.

DPDK defines the minimum alignment as "suitable for any
kind of variable (in the same manner as malloc())", but
internally the alignment is always rounded up to the
cache line size, even if the requested alignment is 0.
We would like to start relying on this behavior in FTL,
where lba maps are allocated using DMA-able memory and
are constantly looked up or modified by different threads.
By having the lba maps unaligned, we risk having those
threads pollute each other's cache lines.
Rather than enforcing this memory alignment in FTL, we
do it in spdk_*malloc directly. In general it makes
sense to have DMA-able memory always cache-line-size
aligned for the same reason as above.

By making dpdk device detach asynchronous we have
actually broken some cases where devices are re-attached
immediately after and fail since they were not detached
yet, so now we're making device detach synchronous again.
For that we'll simply wait inside spdk_pci_device_detach()
for the background dpdk thread to perform all necessary
actions before we return. We'll also print an error msg
if DPDK failed the detach (probably because of some
internal error).

By making dpdk device detach asynchronous we have
actually broken some cases where devices are re-attached
immediately after and fail since they were not detached
yet.
We'll need to make detach synchronous again, and for that
we'll wait for the background dpdk thread to perform all
necessary actions before we return from spdk_pci_device_detach().
However, device detach could be triggered from the very
same dpdk background thread as well. Waiting there would
cause a deadlock, so now we'll schedule asynchronous
device detach to the dpdk thread only if we're not on
that thread already.

Latest DPDK moved some definitions around and we don't
compile with it right now. Adding the missing include
fixes it.

Add spdk_mempool_lookup to lookup the memory pool created by the
primary process. This will be utilized in SPDK multi process
application future.

The global pci tailq is no longer modified on the dpdk
thread, so on the spdk thread we can access it safely
without any lock. The code is slightly more readable
then.
This shows that cleanup_pci_devices() is always wrapped
with lock/unlock. We'll put the locks inside this
function in the next patch.
